What to Fear When You're Expecting!! December 16, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This book is awful. If you want to be scared that every little ache and pain during your pregnancy could be the uterus rupturing or the baby in distress, then buy this book. My husband absolutely hates it as well - he's nervous enough already and this book just puts him over the top. You'll be calling your midwife every five minutes if you follow the advice here. Do yourself a favor and try Pregnancy, Childbirth, and the Newborn - much better book, not fear-based. Ask your midwife for other recommendations too if you want a good book!
Not as bad as most people are saying December 14, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Here is my honest review, both the good and the bad. I read the three main ones on the home page and I have to say I disagree on almost everything. See, how it works is its mainly a Q&A. If I don't have those symptoms, I don't read it! It tells you what you CAN expect, what happens to SOME women...it doesn't mean you're going to have everything on there. Paranoid people read it from cover to cover which then plays tricks on your mind that you have all that stuff. Do like me and only read what applies to you, then close the book. It's meant to be looked at as a reference, not a novel. Reading the answer to your question/problem can prevent you from freaking out and going to the emergency room for something stupid or drive your doctor crazy on your next appointment.
I also don't read the food section. I eat what my body tells me. I believe your body will always be your best guide. I'm five months now and healthy, so I'm doing something right. The only thing that SHOULD be in the food section is foods you should always avoid..like raw eggs, undercooked meats and such. The rest to me is fluff.
Things I found extremely found useful were A) list of normal symptoms for each month (most times I have almost the whole list, so this was useful in letting me know I'm ok), B) what to expect for that doctor's appointment (if I have to get pricked, I'd like to prepare, tyvm) and C) the comedy. No one has mentioned this as far as I see, but I found a lot of comfort in the humor. Comedy is always a good way to get me comforted when I'm nervous about something and I was laughing out loud at a lot of things, including the parts about lovemaking with your partner and how interesting it can be during pregnancy.
It's true...this book is NOT for men. My fiance would be bored to tears. For men I suggest "My boys can swim!", by Ian Davis. It's a total guy's book in layman's terms and can be read in a sitting or two.
What I did agree with some is that the book is informative (there's practically nothing this book has overlooked information wise) but sometimes lacks comfort. Sometimes it does sound like you are reading a technical book (hence the boring to the men and the scary for the women. It did comfort some, but others like explaining exams (which is what most women freak out about) sounded way too techy for my taste. Many mothers like me get nervous and it would be nice to feel like the author is holding you by the hand, and not sounding like some emotionally challenged doctor.
Sorry for the long review, but thought I'd touch basis on the ups and downs. I give it 4 out of 5 because it could have been a bit more personal and emotional instead of so "instruction-y" sometimes. If you feel you can avoid the questions that don't pertain to you like I have and not add unnecessary worry for yourself, then by all means get this book as you will find vast information at your fingertips and a few laughs along the way.
Great and informative book! December 14, 2008 Great book. Some other reviews said this book scared them. I didn't see it that way. I thought it was very informative.
Kindle edition December 11, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I'm enjoying this book as a great resource in preparation for pregnancy (along with Before Your Pregnancy: A 90 Day Guide for Couples on How to Prepare for a Healthy Conception); however, I did want to make note of an annoying formatting glitch for others considering purchasing the Kindle edition. When What to Expect references another location in the book (see XXX, etc.) it does not link through to that location and the text is often missing/invisible. I'm don't know the technical details about how Kindle books are formatted so I'm not sure what caused the referencing issues, but they start out as mildly troublesome and become downright annoying as you progress through the book. I hope they fix this issue. (I'll come back and edit my review if they do.) That said, I'm only deducting one star for the technical issues. I can search using my Kindle, so at least there is a work-around, and I'm learning a lot. The pictures also come through well on the Kindle.
The book is written in a tell-it-all style with a bit of light humor. The author repeatedly says that not all (or sometimes none) of the mentioned symptoms will happen to you, but I like knowing all possibilities so that I can refer back to it when I'm experiencing something and know whether it's a possible iteration, what I should discuss with my doctor, and what should really be of concern. I can see from other reviews that knowing all these details might not be for everyone but, whenever possible, I like to do careful research (particularly before taking a big step like starting a family).
I truly appreciate that this book is available in Kindle edition. This allows me some privacy while reading the book--not to mention that the Kindle is now my preferred reading method.
informational!! December 1, 2008 this is a good book that talks about what to expect month by month. It also covers what to expect at the doctors visit which is a good guideline.
overall ... a good read.
